Nelson Choral Society presents “Of Frost and Fire”

The Nelson Choral Society invites you to come in from the cold and immerse yourself in the warmth and glow of beautiful choral singing. After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the 50-member community choir is back.

Director Kathleen Neudorf has created a program for this concert that examines light after darkness — “the glow on the horizon that gives hope when our nights are longest and we seek warmth.”

“The music serves as a metaphor for what many of us have experienced in the music community during this pandemic - a coming together after the shutdown of activities,” she says.

“The music, the texts, the harmonies are all tenderly crafted to uplift one’s spirit and celebrate that our choral communities are able once again to do what we love.”

The program will include a Nelson première of local composer Don Macdonald’s complex and evocative piece “The Grace of Light.” Other songs include a choral arrangement of Gordon Lightfoot’s “A Winter’s Night,” Ola Gjeilo’s soaring “Luminous Night of the Soul,” and songs by composers such as Eric Whitacre and Karl Jenkins. The accompanist will be Christoph Martens.

The program will include guest choir Inspirare, also directed by Neudorf. This will be the first opportunity for Nelson audiences to hear this new women’s choral ensemble.
